Game Day Guacamole

Game Day Guacamole

A friend asked me recently, "What is the most important holiday in your family?" My response, "Does Super Bowl count? Especially when the Pats are in it?"

Needless to say, Super Bowl is here! The best time of year! What this means is tons of chip dips, #TB12, use of the crock pot and party time. While friends and family pile onto the couch in the living room, the food begins to flow! And there isn't anything better than homemade guacamoleeeee to kick it off. I mean seriously - fresh guac vs. HeluvaGood! store bought dip? It's a pitiful competition.

Here’s the fun thing about guac. It can be made in SO many different ways, intricacies and time spent slicing and dicing. I love it because the tools to make it (knife, cutting board, spoon, bowl) can be found in any home :) If you're in a rush, ditch the onion and tomato. Feeling a little spicy, grab a small habanero pepper at the store.

Note re: jalapenos and other hot peppers.

What bothers me about hot peppers is their unpredictability. I get home, cut the pepper in half, give it a smell to evaluate the spice level, and it might as well be a bell pepper. Some "hot peppers," even when I read the label above the vegetables are disappointingly not spicy whatsoever. Anyone else have this problem? I love when the store has a picture guide to what pepper is what (so clearly I am not the only one having trouble), and even still, no kick. Ah well.

Anyway, this weekend is a v important game day; thus, this recipe calls for a few more ingredients than the simplest version. But it is still super easy to make. Enjoy! and GO PATS!

Simple recipes includes:

  • avocados

  • lime

  • salt

Ingredients

(to fill a medium size bowl)

  • avocados (4)

  • plum tomatoes (2)

  • red onion (1/2 medium size)

  • fresh garlic cloves (1-2)

  • habanero pepper (1/2 small size - or to taste) or substitute crushed red pepper here

  • limes (2)

  • kosher salt (to taste)

  • fresh ground pepper (to taste)

hints

  1. Prepare the following ingredients: dice the tomatoes, mince the garlic cloves*, dice (my preference is very small) the red onion, dice the hot pepper

  2. Slice each avocados the long way and toss out the pits. Scoop out the inside with a spoon and place into your bowl.

  3. Add the ingredients from step 1 into the bowl and wait to fold all ingredients together until all are added.

  4. Cut your limes into quarters to squeeze the most juice out. The fresh limier (is that a word?) the better!

  5. Sprinkle kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

  6. With your spoon, fold the ingredients into the avocados. Depending on preference, you can make it chunky or smoother.

  7. Serve with Siete cassava flour tortilla chips

Recipe notes

*I love, love garlic and may put more than others - which is why I gave you the option of 1-2 cloves. Once the garlic is peeled, cut it in half and lay it flat side down. Then lay the side of the knife blade on top the garlic and smash down with the heel of your hand. If the garlic is really fresh it will just kinda crumble. Then dice away.
